Managerial style 1
Alexa is a senior manager of an insurance company.
Managerial style 2
Mike is a store manager
I’m not an advocate of freedom and employee motivation. My subordinates are basically lazy that constant supervision is a must. I constantly have to monitor what they are doing. People may consider this as authoritarian, but I think this is the only way of managing. Clear rules of disciplines should be set, with corresponding disciplinary procedures. It is not necessary for employees to engage in decision making, they just have to accept orders. Ergo, decisions must be imposed from above without consultation.

Mike believes in what the US Management thinker Douglas Mcgregor in The Human Side of Enterprise called Theory X. It is the idea that people dislike work and will do everything they can to avoid it.

🗣 Speaking Exercise
Direction: Imagine yourself as a manager in a company faced with the decision of adopting a particular managerial style. Consider the two management styles provided below and discuss your approach to managing your department.
📍Participative (Theory Y)
📍 Authoritative (Theory X)
I subscribe to the idea that employees can feel satisfaction at work, if we provide room for them to grow. We give them a sense of responsibility, the idea that the decisions they take have a direct impact on the company’s success and encourage them to use their initiative. I adopt the participative style of management. They don’t have to consult me about every decision they make. When employees take part in the decision-making process, they develop a sense of empowerment. And with this, employees feel valued and trusted. We believe that all this leads to a higher sense of motivation, involvement and enthusiasm among employees. When everyone feels motivated, morale is good and there is a general feeling of well-being in the organization. This leads to improved job satisfaction.
