LET'S READ! 📖
Direction: Read the conversation below. Then, exchange roles with your mentor.
Situation:
James is the Project Manager for the New Partnership Project. He called for a meeting with his team members, Anna and Alex to discuss the possibility of new partnerships and their potential partners.
Greetings
James
Good morning, everyone.
Since everyone is here. Let's begin, shall we?
Stating Objectives
James
I've called this meeting to discuss about our partnerships.
But first, let's go over the report from the last meeting
Anna, could you please read the minutes?
Introducing the Agenda
James
As you can see, there are two items on our agenda.
1. Adding Partners in China
2. Potential Partners
James
So shall we get started?
So, for the first item on the agenda, let's discuss whether it's worth adding partners that provide a shopping platform in China.
I hope you had time to look through Anna's market report, and I'm sure everyone here acknowledges the potential of the Chinese market.
Anna, since you did the analysis, would you like to open the discussion?
Anna
Well, I'm in favor of adding new partners. Ever since we teamed up with our current platform provider, the number of Japanese registered sellers has increased steadily.
James
What does everyone else think?
Alex
I agree with Anna.
James
Our record shows that we have more inquiries than before, so I'm for adding new partners.
So, we all agree to add partners.
That leads us to the next point of our agenda. What kind of partner do we want?
I'd like to propose adding Xhingua.com, the second largest online-shopping firm in China. That way, we could dramatically enhance our platform.
Now, what does everyone think?
Anna
Actually, that's not really how I see it. I mean, the market trend is toward mobile shopping. Xhingua's customers are mainly PC-based.
Considering this trend, I think we should choose a company with a stronger mobile-shopping record.
James
Interesting, but don't you think company size matters?
Anna
I agree to some extent, but we should see things from a publicity point of view.
James
Could you elaborate on that a bit further?
Anna
Sure. If we want to establish our own shopping platform in China in the future, we should consider raising our profile.
If we use a large platform, our name won't stand out. A smaller company may give us a better chance to publicize our name.
James
If I understand correctly, you're for a smaller, mobile driven company, considering the market trends and publicity.
Anna
That's right.
James
What about the others? What are your thoughts on this?
Alex
I'm with Anna on this one.
James
I agree with Anna in principle, but I don't think it's the most feasible choice.
QUESTIONS
1. What was James's proposal about their potential partner?
2. Why did Anna disagree with James's proposal?

🗣 Speaking Exercise
Direction: Think that you are in the situation below. Try to formulate your own dialogue.
Situation:
You are managers of a conglomerate. One of your subsidiaries has become one of the country's largest ice cream chains and is making big profits. However, you are worried that the demand for ice cream may be failing. You have plenty of spare money from your ice cream operation. What should you do?
Option A: Use the money to expand capacity in one of your other companies that has a small share of a fast-growing market.
Option B: The ice cream operation is doing really well, so use the money to promote the ice cream and sell more.
Option C: Use the money to improve the performance of one of your companies that is not doing well.
Mentor
So, I organized this meeting to discuss about our next steps. With the increasing number of competitors, the demand of our production might fail. In fact, one of our production companies is not doing well for the last three months. I was able to come up with possible options we could consider. Let me know what you think.
