[C+] Tell me what you have in mind. (Expressing wants and needs)

LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚

Pattern I

go-to - used as an adjective to describe a person, place, or object that people depend on or "go to first" for what they need

    Examples:

  • If you need someone to lean on. Talk to Monica, she's my go-to person whenever I'm feeling down.

  • I am obsessed with salad dishes. The Salad Stop is my go-to store for a healthy meal.

Pattern II

have in mind

  • means to have a good idea of the kind of thing you want.

    Example:

  • You should tell me what you have in mind because I would like to consider it before I finalize everything.

  • To make up your mind means to decide.

    Example:

  • Would you like to have a strawberry shake or a mango juice? Make up your mind Nancy!

Pattern III

all the bells and whistles - refers to the most modern, up-to-date - usually expensive - features of homes and other buildings that are either new or recently remodeled.

    Examples:

  • This expensive and huge apartment has all the bells and whistles - a chandelier, sleek kitchen, and a mini elevator.

  • I always dream to have all the bells and whistles in my current apartment. It seems to be impossible as of now, though.

Pattern IV

out there - specifically out in the world; in existence

    Examples:

  • There are a lot of respectful and diligent applicants out there. Please choose wisely.

  • There are various of places you will discover out there once you start exploring the country.

Pattern V

in the meantime - indicates a period of time between two events; another word with the same meaning is

meanwhile

    Examples:

  • Larry needs to be away from home for a year. In the meantime, you take over his daily chores while he's out of the country.

  • You should start roasting the turkey for dinner. In the meantime, I will prepare the dessert.

  • I will restore the files in a bit. Meanwhile, please charge all the wireless headphones.

Pattern VI

one more thing - an expression used at the end of a series of remarks; it could be something important that you almost forgot to say or a question that you almost forgot to ask.

    Example:

  • I highly suggest that you cut back on carbs and sugar intake. One more thing, you should exercise daily.

  • I am looking forward seeing you at the party tonight. One more thing, I can't wait to give you my present.

Pattern VII

a heads-up - a warning that something is going to happen, so that the other person will be ready.

    Example:

  • I must give her a heads-up that wearing slippers or casual footwear is not allowed here.

GENESIS AND RECEPTIONIST

Situation:

John is looking for an apartment to move into. He inquired about it and eventually met Shane who will help him find the perfect apartment.

Receptionist

Good morning! How can I help you?

John_Happy Icon

John

I’d like to rent an apartment in this vicinity and I wonder if you can help me.

Icon_Staff

Receptionist

You need to talk to Anna – she’s our go-to agent for apartment rentals. This way please, I’ll introduce you to her.

Anna

Hello, I’m Anna. Have a seat and tell me what kind of apartment you’re looking for. Is it just for you?

John_Happy Icon

John

Well, that depends on what’s available. I’d really rather live alone, but if I don’t see anything that works, I could share a humongous place with a friend of mine.

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

Ok. First, tell me what you have in mind.

John_Happy Icon

John

The most important thing is the location.. I want to be in the city, preferably within this vicinity, so I can walk to the university and to the subway station. I don’t have any vehicle.

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

Ok, then you don’t mind if there’s no parking space.

John_Happy Icon

John

Exactly, but I want a secure building, I also want it to have a living room, a dining room, one bedroom, and, of course, a modern kitchen and bathroom. I don’t really need all the bells and whistles, but I would like to have a balcony.

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

May I know your budget?

John_Happy Icon

John

I’m hoping to find something for about $800 a month.

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

Look, I can tell you right now there are no decent apartments in this location under $1,500 a month – and none of them have dining rooms or balconies. Those apartments similar to your descriptions are at least eight miles outside of the city.

John_Happy Icon

John

There’s no way I’m going to live way out there. Do you think you could find a two-bedroom place closer in for, say, $1,600 a month? Something I could share with my friend?

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

Ok, I'll take note of that. Just give me a couple of hours to see what’s out there. If I find anything worthwhile, we can go have a look this afternoon. In the meantime, I need you and your friend to fill out an application in order to be approved as tenants. I’m assuming you want a one-year lease. Is that right? Oh, one more thing, you don’t have a pet, do you?

John_Happy Icon

John

Yes, I’m willing to sign a one-year lease, and no, I don’t have a pet. But my friend has one. I’d better go give him a heads-up right now so that he can find a way to leave his dog behind.

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

Great. Be sure both of you bring your financial and credit information with you.

John_Happy Icon

John

Right. We’ll see you this afternoon, then. Thank you very much.

Icon_Anna Happy

Anna

See you later.
