LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚
Discussing ways to express when you don’t understand something.
Pattern 1
Sorry, I don't understand... - an informal way of saying you didn’t understand what someone just said
Other expressions:
✧ "I'm sorry, I don't get it. "
✧ "Sorry, but I'm confused."
✧ "Sorry, but I'm afraid I don't follow you."
Examples:
Sorry, I don’t understand what you’re saying.
I’m sorry, I don’t understand this part.
Pattern 2
Could you say ... again? - used when we didn’t hear or understand what someone just said, and we’re politely asking them to repeat it
Other ways to say:
✧ "One more time, please?"
✧ "I couldn't catch that. Could you repeat what you said?"
✧ "Please say that again. "
✧ "Would you mind repeating that?"
Examples:
Could you say it again? I didn’t hear the question clearly.
Would you mind repeating that? It was a bit too fast for me.
Pattern 3
I have no questions... - used when we understand everything, or we don’t need more information
Other ways to say:
✧ "I got it!"
✧ "I understand clearly."
✧ "All clear."
✧ "It's all good."
✧ "That's clear, thank you."
Examples:
I have no questions about the topic.
I understand clearly after reading the instructions.
Pattern 4
Could you explain... more? - used when we don’t understand something and want someone to explain it in a simple way
Other ways to say:
✧ "Could you please clarify it? "
✧ "Can you make it easier to understand?"
✧ "Explain it further, please? "
Examples:
Could you explain the story more? I didn’t understand it.
Can you make this lesson easier to understand?
LET'S READ! 📖
Direction: Read the conversation below. Then, exchange roles with your mentor.
Situation:
Sam is asking Jenny to explain the presentation on last year’s sales.
Sam
Jenny
Oh sure! This presentation shows our sales last year.
Sam
Ah, I see, but I don't understand this graph.
Jenny
This graph shows the status of our monthly sales.
Sam
Sorry, I don’t understand. Can you make it easier to understand?
Jenny
Of course! This line goes up and down because it shows how much we sold each month. For example, here in June, our sales were very high. But in September, the sales went down.
Sam
Ahh, okay. That makes more sense now.
Jenny
Let me know if something isn’t clear!
Sam
Actually, can you explain this part one more time, please?
Jenny
Sure! I’ll say it again. In June, we sold a lot, so the line goes up. Then in September, we sold less, so the line goes down.
Sam
Ahh, now I got it! Thank you for explaining it again.
Jenny
No problem at all! Do you have more questions?
Sam
Hmm, let me check… Nope, it’s all good now.
Jenny
Great! I’m happy to help.
Sam
Thank you so much, Jenny.
Jenny
You’re welcome! Let me know if you need help later.
