LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚

What? and Which?

1. Use What + noun for general questions when there are many possibilities, and Which + noun when there is a small or limited number of possibilities.

    Example:

  • What language do they speak in Papua New Guinea? (many possibilities)

  • Which language shall we use - Japanese or English? (two possibilities)


2. We say What time...?, What kind(s) of ...? and What size...?

    Example:

  • What time is it in Japan?

  • What kinds of bees do you know?

  • What size are these shirts?


3. Use Which of...+ pronoun or the.

    Example:

  • Which of them is the queen?

  • Which of the answers do you know?


4. We say Which one(s)...?

    Example:

  • Which one would you like?

  • Which ones are worker bees?

How...? Questions

1. Use How + an adjective or an adverb in questions.

    Example:

  • How cold is the water?

  • How hungry are you?

  • How late did you get home?


2. Use How far...? to ask about distance.

    Example:

    One hour by plane.

3. Use How long...? to ask about time or length.

    Example:

Use How long does it take? to ask about how much time you need to go somewhere or do something.

    Example:

4. Use How often...? to ask about frequency.

    Example:

    How often do you go to the gym?

5. Use How many...? with plural countable nouns.

    Example:

  • How many people have swum the Channel?

  • How many tomatoes do we need?


6. Use How much...? with singular uncountable nouns.

    Example:

  • How much flour shall we add?

  • How much time do you need?


7. Use How much...? without a noun to ask about the price or quantity of something.

    Example:
