LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚

I. Linking words: and, but, or, so, because

1. Use and, but, or, so, and because to link two or more words, sentences, or parts of sentences.

    Example:

  • day and night

  • the morning or afternoon

  • It was hot, so people worked at night.


2. Use and to add information.

    Example:

  • I left my hotel and walked to the store.

  • a warm and beautiful night

NOTES
  1. In a long list, separate the items with commas, but remember to put and before the last item.

  2. Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Korean.


3. Use but to contrast information.

    Example:

  • I love China but I don't like the food much.

  • nice but expensive


4. Use or to show alternatives

    Example:

  • Do you want to see the old town or go to the beach?

  • Don't shout or scream.


5. Use so to show the result of something.

    Example:

  • The church is very old, so some part of it is broken.

  • They worked all night, so they were tired in the morning.


6. Use because to show the reason for something. Because usually goes in the middle of the sentence.

    Example:

  • The church is very old, so some part of it is broken.

  • The Chinese needed the wall because they had enemies.

🔺 If you put because at the beginning of the sentence, you need to use a comma.

    Example:

  • Because you speak Chinese, you can buy the tickets.
