The Interview

Icon_Alex

Alex

Good morning. I'm not too early, am I?

Icon_Take

Boss

No, not at all. You've been given a cup of coffee, haven’t you?

Icon_Alex

Alex

Yes, I have, thank you.

Icon_Take

Boss

We should be ready for you in a couple of minutes. You wouldn't mind filling in these forms while you're waiting, would you?

Icon_Alex

Alex

Ok, no problem. I'll give them to the receptionist when I've finished, shall I?

Icon_Take

Boss

If you would.

A few minutes later....

Icon_Take

Boss

So the hours are 9:30 to 5:30 Monday to Friday, that's normal, isn't it? And you'll be working in the stats department; the receptionist showed you where that is, didn't she?

Icon_Alex

Alex

Well yes, she did, but...

Icon_Take

Boss

And you haven't had any major illnesses, have you?

Icon_Alex

Alex

No, but I think there's some sort of a mistake.

Icon_Take

Boss

Mistake? What do you mean?

Icon_Alex

Alex

I'm not applying for a position in the Stats department.

Icon_Take

Boss

What? You are Alex Lee, aren't you?

Icon_Alex

Alex

I'm afraid not. My name's Alex Smith.

Question Tags

1. Use question tags in conversations to check information or to check that the listener agrees with you.

    Example:

  • Chocolate is bad for you, isn't it?

  • You phoned the doctor, didn't you?

  • It's a lovely day, isn't it?

2. A sentence with a question tag has a main clause and the question tag. The question tag has an auxiliary ( is, do, have ) or a modal ( will, can ) + a subject pronoun.

Question Tag 1

🔺 If there is no auxiliary or modal, use the correct form of do.

    Example:

  • You know Dr. Jones, don't you?

  • The doctor didn't phone, did she?

NOTES
  1. I'm in the main clause → aren't I in the question tag.

    Example: I'm right, aren't I?

3. Usually, if the main clause is affirmative, the question tag is negative.

Question Tag 2
