LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚

I. Adverbs of manner

1. Use adverbs of manner to describe how something happens.

    Example:

  • He eats very healthily.

  • They give us energy quickly.

2. We usually form adverbs of manner by adding -ly to the adjective.

    Example:

  • bad ➡ badly

  • careful ➡ carefully

🔺 If the adjective ends in -y, we usually change the -y to i.

    Example:

  • angry ➡ angrily

  • easy ➡ easily

  • happy ➡ happily

3. Some adjectives end in -ly. We don't add -ly to make the adverb.

    Example:

  • friendly

  • lonely

  • lovely

  • He spoke to them in a friendly way.

4. Some adverbs are the same as the adjectives.

    Example:

  • early

  • far

  • fast

  • A fast car (adjective)

  • eating fast (adverb)

5. Well is the adverb from good.

    Example:

  • Sleep well.

6. Adverbs of manner often come at the end of a sentence.

    Example:

  • Simple carbohydrates provide energy quickly.

II. Comparative and Superlative Adverbs

1. Add more or less to make the comparative form of most adverbs.

    Example:

  • Light travels more quickly than sound.

  • Light objects do not fall less quickly.

2. Add most or least to make the superlative form of most adverbs.

    Example:

  • Which runs most quickly?

  • Which runs least quickly?

3. Many short adverbs, such as early, fast, hard, high, late, long, and soon have comparative forms with -er and superlative forms with -est.

    Example:

  • early ➡ earlier ➡ earliest

  • fast ➡ faster ➡ fastest

4. Some common adverbs have irregular comparative and superlative forms.

    Example:

  • well ➡ better ➡ best

  • badly ➡ worse ➡ worst

  • far ➡ farther / further ➡ farthest / furthest

5. Use as + adverb + as when two or more people or things are equal.

Adverbs of Manner and Frequency 02

2. Adverbs of frequency usually go before the main verb of the sentence.

    Example:

  • Teenagers don't usually sleep enough.

3. The adverb of frequency usually goes after the verb be.

    Example:

  • Sleep is sometimes possible with your eyes open.

  • The class is usually in room 7.

NOTES
  1. When have is a main verb, the adverb goes before have.

  2. Example:

  3. New babies normally have strange sleeping habits.

  4. When have is an auxiliary, the adverb goes after have.

    Example:

  5. I have often visited them.

5. How often...? questions usually need an answer with an adverb of frequency.

LET'S PRACTICE! 📝

Direction: Talk about your weekly routine using the adverbs of manner and frequency.

    Example:

My company has a flexible work setup so I don't have to go to the office regularly. But recently, I go there more often to make preparations for an important launching event. On days when I don't go to the office, I usually wake up late, especially when I don't have any meetings scheduled. Before I begin my work, I always make sure to have a cup of brewed coffee as it helps me work productively. I typically start working at 10 am. In the morning, I have to meticulously review the designs created by our graphic artists before submitting them to our manager. In the afternoons, I devote my time responding to clients inquiries and requests. On weekdays, I often walk my dog to a nearby park.

Now, it's your turn.
