[F-E] Modals of Ability and Request

LET'S READ! 📖

Direction: Read the short passage then answer the questions being asked.

1-24

How can dogs help us?

Dogs can hear and see much better than humans. They can also smell many things that humans can't. During World War I, many soldiers went blind. Dogs were able to look after the blind soldiers. In World War II, dogs were able to smell or hear survivors that people could not find. Sony created a robotic dog called Aibo. Will a robot be able to replace a dog?

QUESTIONS

1. What can dogs do that humans can't?

2. How did dogs help during World War I?

3. How did dogs find the survivors in World War II?

LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚

I. Modals of Ability

1. Use can to talk about ability.

    Example:

  • Dogs can hear and see much better than humans.

  • They can also smell many things.

2. Can does not change. It is the same with all subjects.

    Example:

  • I can swim. He can swim. They can swim.

3. Can is followed by a second verb. The second verb is the base form.

    Example:

  • Dogs can hear much better than humans. NOT Dogs can to hear...

4. Use could (not) or was / were (not) able to for the past.

    Example:

  • In World War II, dogs were able to smell or hear survivors that people could not find.

5. Use will be able to for the future. The negative form of the future is will not be able to or won't be able to.

    Example:

  • A robot will / won't be able to replace a dog.

  • Will a robot ever be able to replace a dog?

II. Modals of Request

1. Use can, could, and may to ask for something politely; can and could are more common than may.

    Example:

  • Can I ask you just one more thing?

  • Could you please leave your name and number?

  • May I help you?

2. Use can and could, but not may, to ask people to do things.

    Example:

  • Could she phone me when she's free?

  • Can you come here?

3. We can use can, could, and may with the first person to ask for permission.

Could is more polite than can. May is formal. We usually give permission with can, or we can just say, "Of course" or "Sure".

    Examples:

    Icon_Mentor

    Can I leave the room?

    Icon_Learner

    Yes, you can.
