Future Tenses

Many scientists think that there is a possibility that humans will be living and working on Mars. In fact, they are already on their quest to turn Mars into a new Earth.

Humans need three basic things to live: water to drink, air to breathe, and food to eat. Because of the lack of these necessities, it isn't possible to live on Mars right now. For one thing, there is not enough oxygen. There is also no liquid water—just some ice. So how can we make Mars habitable?

The answer, say scientists, is a process called terraforming. Terraforming means changing the environment of a planet so that it is similar to Earth’s. On Mars, the average temperature is about minus 60 degrees Celsius. So one of the main goals of terraforming Mars is to warm it up. One idea for warming Mars comes from a problem here on Earth—climate change. Most scientists agree that Earth is becoming warmer due to increased levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. We might create similar conditions on Mars by building factories that release greenhouse gases. The gases will change the atmosphere on Mars. Rain will fall, and it may be possible to grow plants for food. The plants will add more oxygen to the air. There will be many difficulties in terraforming Mars.

The project could take many centuries, and the cost will be high. We have some of the technology, such as the ability to create greenhouse gases, but not the money. However, life on Mars is a real possibility for future generations.

QUESTIONS:

1. Why can't we live on Mars yet?

2. What should be done in order to make Mars warm?

Future Tenses

"Will" and "be going to"

  1. Use "will" with the infinitive without "to".
  • This is the most usual way to talk about the future in English. We use it to give information about the future, but we don't use it to talk about plans, arrangements, or schedules.

    Examples:

  • We will triple the sale this year.

  • They will install a heating and lighting system in our house.

  1. Use "will" for instant decisions made at the time of speaking. We often use the contracted form "'ll" in this context.

    Examples:

  • I'll eat chocolates one after the other until the box is finished.

  • I'll buy it back just as soon as I get some cash.

  1. Use "will" for predictions based on your opinion.
  • We often use words like "think", "hope", and "be sure" with "will".

    Examples:

  • Perhaps I will buy lean meat and mince it myself..

  • Maybe your computer will send you a message.

Be going to

  1. Use "am / is / are (not) going to" + infinitive without to.
  • Use "be going to" for plans and intentions.

    Examples:

  • I am going to spend the whole afternoon pruning roses.

  • A global environmental meeting is going to be held here.

  1. Use be going to for predictions based on present evidence.

    Examples:

  • New technology is going to revolutionize everything we do.

  • A large storm is coming towards the east coast of the USA. It's going to reach Florida soon.

Will and be going to

  1. We use both "will" and "be going to" for predictions about the future, with slightly different meanings.

    Examples:

  • We're going to Japan at the beginning of July.

  • We will go to Japan at the beginning of July.

Future Continuous

  1. We make future continuous with "will / won't" + be + verb + ing.
  • We occasionally use "shall / shan't" + be + verb + -ing with "I" and "we" in formal language.
  • Use this to talk about something that will be in progress at a particular time in the future.

    Examples:

  • While we are having our meeting, the boss will be talking to the builders.

  • I shall be making a speech during the afternoon.

Future perfect

Future perfect

  1. Use this tense to talk about actions and situations that will be finished by a certain time in the future.
  • We often use this with a time phrase about the future.

    Examples:

  • By the end of this summer, two million people will have visited Venice.

  • The old town will have changed completely before they do anything.
