LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚

Nonrestrictive Adjective Clauses

  • give additional information about the nouns they modify, but this information does not affect or alter the basic meaning of that noun.
  • Typically, nonrestrictive adjective clauses give supplementary information.

    Example:

  • The yacht, owned by a billionaire entrepreneur, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

  • The nonrestrictive adjective clause "owned by a billionaire entrepreneur" does not define or limit who the owner of the yacht is.

When the nonrestrictive adjective clause is removed, the meaning of the nouns it modifies do not change.

The Restrictive Adjective Clause can have some distinctions in both speech and writing.

IN SPEECH

- Nonrestrictive adjective clauses are cut off by pauses at both the beginning and the end of the nonrestrictive clause.

    Example:

  • The documentary, | directed by an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, | sheds light on pressing social issues.

  •   The symbol [ | ] indicates the boundary of a phrase unit.

The entire nonrestrictive adjective clause is also said at a lower pitch level than the rest of the sentence.

    Example:

    23-AGA-NONRESTRICTIVE..

IN WRITING

- Restrictive Clauses are always set off with commas.

    Example:

  • The company, founded by a group of visionary entrepreneurs, revolutionized the tech industry.

GRAMMAR NOTES
  1. All adjective clauses that modify proper nouns are nonrestrictive.

  2. The most effective way to distinguish between a restrictive and nonrestrictive adjective clause is to remove it from the sentence and observe if the basic meaning changes. If the meaning is altered, then the adjective clause is considered restrictive. If the meaning remains the same, it is nonrestrictive. This method is essential in accurately identifying and using adjective clauses.
