Prepositions of Time and Place-01

JK Rowling is famous for creating the character of Harry Potter. Books by Rowling include Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The stories are about a young boy with magical powers. The author originally wrote under the name Joanne Rowling. Her publisher thought that boys would not be keen on reading a book by a female author. So she called herself JK Rowling. She has said that the character Hermione from the Harry Potter stories is similar to herself at the age of 11. She says writing is the perfect job for her as she is happy by herself in a room ‘making things up’. The idea for Harry Potter came to her when she was on the way home on a train, but she did not complete the first book for several years. She was at first disappointed with the reaction from the publishers — twelve publishers were not interested in the first Harry Potter book. When she wrote the first book, she had little money. She was a single mother, bringing up her child on her own, but the Harry Potter books turned her into a multi-millionaire. Many parents say that thanks to the Harry Potter books, their children now enjoy reading again.

A. Direction: Talk about your employment history using the prepositions of time and place.

    Example:

I started my first job right after graduating from college. I worked as an intern at a marketing agency for six months. Following that, I spend two years as a junior marketing associate at a multinational corporation. During my time there, I gained valuable skills about the industry. Three years later, I decided to pursue a different career and worked at a project coordinator for a technology startup for more than a year. Before I worked in my current job, I joined an ESL company where I worked as a teacher. I worked there from January of this year until September. Currently, I am running my own flower shop.
