Hand Towels


Most of the restaurants in Japan give wet hand towels to customers, some of them are hot towels. They offer these towels before meals so that they can clean their hands and mouths anytime. This Japanese practice is gaining a lot of attention outside of Japan that even foreign airlines have begun giving these to their passengers.

Most children are afraid of staying in hospitals, and because of this hospitals are always looking for ways to make them feel more comfortable. In some hospitals, they have pets that children can play with. They try to help children feel more relaxed by doing so. Animals can really help people in many different ways.

Grammar Check

    Participle Clauses

  • this enables us to say information in a more economical way.

  • are formed using present participles such as going, reading, seeing, walking, etc. and past participles like gone, read, seen, walked, etc.

  • used when the participle and the verb in the main clause have the same subject.

  • mainly used in written texts, particularly in a literary, academic or journalistic style.

A. Present participle clause

- this has a similar meaning to active verbs


  Examples:

1. To give the result of an action

The dam broke, flooding the entire city.


2. To give the reason for an action

Knowing she loved baking pastries, her husband bought her an oven and other baking appliances.


3. To talk about an action that happened at the same time as another action.

Standing in the queue, I realized I didn't have my wallet with me.


B. Past participle clause

- this normally has a passive meaning


  Examples:

1. With a similar meaning to an "if" condition

Used in this way, participles can make your writing more concise.

2. To give reason for an action

Worried by the news, she called her daughter immediately.


3. To add information about the subject of the main clause.

Filled with pride, he walked towards the stage to receive his medal.

📌 Be careful with your word choices. Note that we cannot use "calling" to describe what the woman is doing in the picture because she is already talking which means "talking with someone on (or over) the phone" is better.

📌 In this part, you have to explain two points. The last part of your sentence must show the reason for the 1st sentence. You can use "he is full" or you can also say "he has already eaten enough".


📌 In the 2nd example, note the difference in the usage of trash can and rubbish bin. Trash can is generally used in American English while Rubbish bin is chiefly British English.
