LET'S READ! 📖
Direction: Read the conversation below. Then, exchange roles with your mentor.
Situation:
Coworkers Alex and Melly are having lunch together, and while eating, Alex sees some interesting news on the newspaper and tells Melly about it.
Alex
Melly
You're kidding me! He should've kept it! If I found $100,000, I wouldn't return it so fast.
Alex
Why? What would you do?
Melly
Well, I'd go straight to the mall and spend it. I could purchase several stylish outfits and jewelry.
Alex
Someone might also find out about it. And then you could go to jail.
Melly
Hmm. You've got a point. So what would you do if you found that much money?
Alex
Oh, you know me Melly. I'm so honest. I scare myself sometimes. I'd take the money straight to the police.
Melly
I think that wouldn't be such a bad idea. Perhaps you'd have better luck than the man in the article. Maybe the owner of the money would give you a big reward.
Alex
Well, they say it pays to be honest. Right?
Melly
That is really true. Good karma awaits you.
Alex
I always believe in good karma.
Melly
I've always admired how good of a person you are, Alex.
But, how about if you were the owner of that money? What would you have done to thank the man?
Alex
Hmm. Well, I think I would give him a reward. I'd give him some cash for his act of honesty.
Melly
Me too. It's rare to find someone that's honest enough to give back such big amount of money.
Alex
That's right. The owner was just so lucky that a good person found his money.
Melly
Exactly.
QUESTION
1. If Melly found the money, what would have she done?
2. What would Alex have done?
3. How did the owner of the money thank the guy who found his money?
LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚
A. Unreal conditional sentences with if clause
- Unreal conditional sentences describe imaginary situations with simple past forms and consequences in the present.
Imaginary situation (simple past)
What would you do if you found $100,000
If I found $100,000
Possible consequence (would, could, or might + verb)
• I would / I'd go straight to the mall.
• I could buy lots of nice clothes and jewelry.
• I might go to the police.
• I wouldn't return it so fast.
- NOTES
-
-
The clauses in unreal conditional sentences can come in either order. Don't use a comma when the if clause comes second:
If I won the lottery, I'd share the money with my family. | I'd share the money with my family if I won the lottery.
-
A-1. Complete the conversation with the correct form of the verbs in the parentheses.
If you (think) a friend was doing something dangerous, you (say) something to him, or you (keep) quiet?
I definitely (talk) to my friend about it.
B. Past modals
- Use would have or should have + past participle to give opinions or suggestions about actions in the past.
What should I have done?
• You should have told them about it.
• You shouldn't have kept it a secret.
What would you have done?
• I would have picked it up if I had noticed.
• I wouldn't have accepted his offer.
- NOTES
-
-
Use should have and would have for all subjects. They don't change from:
He should have called sooner. |
He should has called sooner.
-
B-1. Complete the conversations below.
I ignored a message from someone I don't like. What you
(would do)?
I (reply) to the person. It just takes a minute!
The cashier gave me too much change. What I
(should do)?
You (say) something. You (not take) the money.
