LET'S READ! 📖
Direction: Read the conversation below. Then, exchange roles with your mentor.
Situation:
Belle and Take are living in the same building and they meet at the hallway. They talk about the Belle's daughter expenses for her daughter.
Take
Belle
Ah yeah, these are my daughter's. She asked me to get them for her. She's still at school.
Take
Oh, she's still a student? How come she already has these bills?
Belle
Well, she's a single mom and she lives next door.
Take
Oh really? But I haven't seen her around.
Belle
She moved here a few weeks ago and she has a strenuous schedule.
Take
I see. She has heaps of obligations already. Young people these days tend to have lots of things to tackle and sort out compared to our generation.
Belle
Health insurance, child-care bills, tuition fee, daily expenses, groceries, rent, and electricity and water bills. Name it! She has all of them.
Take
Wow! That must be distressing for her.
Belle
Well she's distressed to say the least. She's struggling to make ends meet now that she resumes studying and only works part time.
Take
Health insurance is really costly, isn't it?
Belle
Yeah! Actually, She didn't have any trouble paying for it when she was working full time. Her employer used to pay her health insurance.
Take
And child care and needs aren't cheap, are they?
Belle
Indeed, without a doubt. I was shocked to learn that, after covering her rent and other bills, practically all of her remaining funds are used to support her son.
Take
Students with children, like your daughter, should be entitled to free daycare from colleges. Childcare fee is a burden!
Belle
Yes. Although it's uncommon but it would be very beneficial. Anyways, how are things with your son?
Take
Oh, not bad, but he's still not sure what he's going to do after he graduates.
Belle
Yeah, it's hard to find a job these days, isn't it?
Take
It's not that. He's just not sure anymore if he really wants to be a lawyer.
Belle
So, what does he plan to do?
Take
He once mentioned he would like to open his own restaurant since he enjoys cooking, but I think my wife would flip.
QUESTION
1. What was Take's opinion about child care fee?
2. How did Sandy describe her daughter's situation?
3. What does Take think colleges should do for students with children? Why?
4. What is Take's son concerned about?
