LET'S READ! 📖
Direction: Read the conversation below. Then, exchange roles with your mentor.
Situation:
Alex and Anna are talking about Kate's job.
Alex
Anna
Well, the past several weeks have been very hectic. We had to finish filming the out-of-town scenes for the movie.
Alex
Ahh I see. That must be so exciting, I guess. You get to know different people and you can go to different places as well.
Anna
Yeah, you're right but I can't say that this line of work won't wear you out eventually.
Alex
Oh, what do you mean?
Anna
My job is also demanding. A one-minute scene in a film can take days to shoot.
Alex
Really? Why is that so? I suppose that actors are already so skilled that they can deliver the lines perfectly the first time.
Anna
Of course, they are all good and talented but the director is always meticulous. He checks every single aspect of the scene. He wants everything to be impeccable.
Alex
Wow! That's complicated.
Anna
That's why a scene isn't just filmed just once. There must be numerous different shots taken. Only the best ones are used in the final film.
Alex
So, how many times does a normal scene need to be taken?
Anna
It depends, but we typically take as many as 20 times. One scene may be shot from 5 to 10 angles.
Alex
I didn't realize that. All I was just thinking was it's fun and fascinating. Working on movies seems quite stimulating.
Anna
Well, don't get me wrong. I do love my job. Every time we release a movie, I feel a sense of fulfillment.
Alex
That's amazing!
Anna
Why don't you come visit the our location next time? I can show you how things are done.
Alex
Oh sure! I'd love that. You go to different locations, right? It must be fun to move to different places for work!
Anna
It's not exactly as glamorous as people think. A location manager, who manages the location once filming has started, makes sure everyone gets there and negotiates parking, noise reduction power sources, and a lot more! It's a dreadful job.
Alex
That sounds tough!
Anna
And the hours can constantly change. We sometimes shoot a scene through the night. Or we may start work early in the morning.
If we're going to start filming at seven, we usually have to be on the job by two or three A.M. to get ready.
Alex
Two in the morning? That's unbelievable!
Anna
Oh no, it's not. It happens all the time.
QUESTION
1. Why was Anna so busy for the past few weeks?
2. How did Anna describe her job?
3. What was Alex's first impression of Anna's job?
4. Why is a location manager's job dreadful?

B. Defining and Non-defining relative clauses
- Defining relative clauses:
-
-
give us essential information – information that tells us who or what we are talking about
-
use either "who" or "that" in defining relative clauses about people
📍 A set designer is an artist who/that makes important contributions to a theater production.
-
- Non-Defining relative clauses:
-
-
they give us extra information about someone or something; they aren't essential for understanding who or what we are talking about
-
we only use "who" in non-defining relative clauses about people; use commas before and after a non-defining relative clause
📍 A set designer, who makes important contributions to a theater production, has to be very creative..
-
B1. Identify if the clause in each sentence is "defining" or "non-defining" and tell your mentor where to put commas to the non-defining clauses.
