LET'S READ! 📖
Direction: Read the conversation below. Then, exchange roles with your mentor.
Marie
Keiko
Oh, congratulations!
Marie
Yeah, gosh, it takes me back to when John first asked me to marry him. He had it all planned out so carefully.
Keiko
Uh-oh. Sounds like there is a romantic story here.
Marie
It's quite a story all right. He was working in New York, and I was still living in England so I flew to New York City to spend a long weekend with him. We went to the top of the empire state building...
Keiko
.. and he asked you to marry him? With the stars twinkling in the night sky? There, at the top of the building, with the beautiful skyline of New York City right below you?! How romantic!
Marie
Uhm, well, uh, not quite. Yes, in his original plan he was going to ask me there. But..
Keiko
But?
Marie
Well, we had some friends with us, and John told his bff about the romantic Empire State Building proposal plan. His friend begged him not to propose to me there!
Keiko
Are you kidding? Why not?
Marie
John's friend was with his girlfriend, too. He was worried that if John asked me to marry him, then his girlfriend would expect a proposal, too.
Keiko
Hahahaha! So then what happened?
Marie
Well, then John went to Plan B. He was going to take me out for a romantic meal at one of those Japanese restaurants where they prepare the food at the table. He was going to ask the guy to put my ring in the food.
Keiko
Hahaha. This is too funny! Okay, so why didn't that happen?
Marie
I was so jet-lagged I didn't want to go out for dinner.
Keiko
Just as well. You'd probably have eaten the ring. I can see you choking on your engagement ring.
Marie
Oh, very funny. Anyway, we ended up going out to a bagel place.
Keiko
Oh no! Don't tell me he stuck the ring in the cream cheese, and then you couldn't find it!
Marie
Oh, just stop it. it may have been a little bagel place, but it could have been the fanciest, most elegant candlelit restaurant. He offered me the most beautiful ring and said, "Will you be my wife?"
QUESTION
1. How did John originally plan to propose to Anna?
2. Why did John's friend convince him not to propose at the Empire State Building?
LET'S UNDERSTAND! 📚
A. Past Continuous Tense
- The past continuous tense is used to represent an action that was on going in the past. In other words, it shows the progress of the action or event at a specific time in the past.
Subject + was / were + present participle (verb -ing)
Uses of Past Continuous Tense
1. An action in the past that gets interrupted.
2. Ongoing actions at a specified time.
3. Habitual actions in the past (usually with adverbs like always)
B. Third Conditional
- This is the way we imagine how things could have been different in the past. If something had been different, something else would have happened. Notice that both the condition and result are impossible now.
He wouldn't have missed the bus if he hadn't overslept.
If I had studied harder, I could have passed the exam.
