The sea, rivers and mountains


SEA


A. coast noun

  • is the border between the land and the sea, or the part of a country that is next to the sea.

    Example:

  • There are industrial cities and a great number of population living along the coast.

B. shore noun

  • is a more general word for the land along the edge of a sea, lake, or wide river.

    Example:

  • People were spending a hot afternoon on the shore.

C. beach noun

  • is an area along the edge of a sea, lake, or wide river that is covered with sand or small stones.

    Example:

  • Children were building sandcastles on the beach.

D. valley phrase

  • a low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it

    Example:

  • The town is planning to build a dam at the valley.

E. gorge noun

  • a narrow valley between hills or mountains, typically with steep rocky walls and a stream running through it

    Example:

  • We plan to hike in the Gorge.

F. stream noun

  • a small, narrow river

    Example:

  • There's a stream that flows through their garden.

G. ridge noun

  • a long narrow hilltop, mountain range, or watershed

    Example:

  • We walked peacefully along the mountain ridge.

H. peak noun

  • the pointed top of a mountain

    Example:

  • The climbers made camp halfway up the peak.

I. summit noun

  • the highest point of a hill or mountain

    Example:

  • They climbed up the mountain with great determination and reached the summit.

J. glacier noun

  • a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles

    Example:

  • Glaciers start to melt at this time of year.
