LET'S UNDERSTAND 3 - Describing clothes and fashion trends 📚

II. ADJECTIVES

A. smart casual

  • relaxed, informal clothes that are stylish, well-fitting, and neat; casual but with a polished look

    Example:

  • The party I'm attending has a smart-casual dress code so I'm thinking of wearing a t-shirt underneath a blazer, dress pants, and leather loafers.

B. made-to-measure

  • used for a suit, shirt, or other item of clothing which is made by a tailor to fit the person perfectly rather than buying a ready made one from a shop

    Example:

  • Jerome got even more excited for his wedding after trying on his made-to-measure tailored suit which makes him look sleeker than he already is.

C. up-to-the-minute

  • incorporating the most recent fashion trends or styles

    Example:

  • As an influencer, Sheena tries to keep wearing up-to-the-minute clothing and accessories in her Instagram posts to keep her followers interested.

II. PHRASES

A. all the rage

  • very popular and fashionable, usually implied that it will only last for a particular time

    Example:

  • When we were in high school, all my friends were crazy about One Direction. They were all the rage back then.

B. the height of fashion

  • very fashionable; "the height of" is used to say that it is the best or highest level of something

    Example:

  • Nowadays, a lot of teenagers are at the height of fashion because of the influence of social media.

C. set a new trend

  • to start a new fashion; to make a fashion statement become trendy

    Example:

  • The TV show Gossip Girl was very popular among teens and young adults and the characters in the show even set new trends that made waves in the fashion industry.

D. slave to fashion

  • someone strongly influenced by fashion; used in a disapproving way or as a criticism

    Example:

  • Edward has been crazy about keeping up with the latest trends since he was in high school, and now many of his friends see him as a slave to fashion even though he's already in his mid-30s.

E. catch on

  • to become popular or trendy

    Example:

  • The new AirPods Max caught on with Apple product enthusiasts and music lovers as soon as it got released.
