STRATEGY 1:

Understanding the types of questions in Part 6

LET'S UNDERSTAND 1

Compared to Part 5 of the TOEIC Test, some questions in Part 6 need information that is found in other sentences in the passage. In addition to finding grammar and vocabulary questions, you will need to choose phrases or sentences that will complete the text.

QUESTION TYPESEXAMPLES

Type 1. Vocabulary questions

For vocabulary questions, look for words or phrases that give clues to the correct answer. Words or phrases in the sentence can help you eliminate distractors and point you to the correct choice. In question 2 of SNEAK PEEK 1, the phrase to receive feedback from could eliminate choices (A), (B) and (D) since you need a person in the blank. Films, cameras, and photographs are not able to provide feedback. Thus, choice (C) is the correct answer.

You will be encouraged to share your photographs in class to receive feedback from your (2).

(A) films

(B) cameras

(C) classmates

(D) photographs

Type 2. Grammar questions

For grammar questions, pay attention to words before and after the blanks to determine which part of speech is required. Usually, words right before and after the blank will tell you which part of speech the correct answer choice needs to be. This helps you eliminate distractors. In question 1 of SNEAK PEEK, the words we will NOT be right before the blank needs to be followed by the -ing form of a verb. This eliminates choices (A), (B) and (D). Thus, choice (C) is the correct answer.

We will NOT be (1) digital photography in this class. See Course 102: Basic Digital..

(A) cover

(B) covers

(C) covering

(D) covered

Type 3. Phrase/Sentence questions

The answer choices are either short phrases or complete sentences. For short phrases, the correct answer will need to make sense when coupled with the remaining part of the sentence. In question 3 of SNEAK PEEK, the sentence ends in you will shoot a minimum of six rolls of film, so the first half must be related. Only choice (B) gives a sensible answer, the students need to shoot six rolls of film in order to complete the assignments.

For complete sentences, you need to unerstand the topic of the portion of the text that is missing a sentence so that you can choose the sentence that matches the topic best. In question 4, the missing sentence appears after information about renting a scanner from the school. Only choice (C) gives an appropriate answer - the student can call the main office of the school for more details about renting a scanner. Choices (A) and (D) are about finding somewhere to buy a scanner from, but the text says that the school provides them, so they are incorrect. Choice (B) talks about extending the deadline, so this cannot make sense either.

(3), you will shoot a minimum of six rolls of film.

(A) Your teacher will provide you with

(B) To complete all the assignments

(C) The second level of the course will explain

(D) Most professional photographers

4.

(A) Talk to your professor about recommended stores

(B) You may be permitted to extend your deadline

(C) Call the main office for details

(D) Look online for a number of providers

TOEIC TIPS!

23. Understand the part with the missing phrase or sentence.

For phrase questions, you need to understand the meaning of the sentence as whole, rather than only identifying the grammar needed or understanding the vocabualry. For sentence questions, you need to understand the topic of the part of the text that is missing the sentence so that you can find the sentence that matches the topic best. These kinds of questions are not like the ones in Part 5 of the TOEIC Test.
