SNEAK PEEK 1: Brainstorming vocabulary words to pick out the theme
Instructions: Complete the tables with possible Nouns and Verbs that you see in each photograph. Give at least four Nouns and four Verbs for each photograph.

LET'S TRY IT 1
Instructions: Read the tip below and use the nouns and verbs in SNEAK PEEK to make two sentences about each picture.
Statements in Part 1 of the TOEIC Test are usually in the Present Continuous form (action verbs) or in the Present Simple form (state verbs).
A. Present Continuous
The (subject) is / are doing (something).
Example: The people are working in the office. (SNEAK PEEK 1 #1)
B. Present Simple
The (subject) is / are / has (something / somewhere).
Example: The boy has short hair. (SNEAK PEEK 1 #2)
Now, predict the sentences about the four pictures using the forms as discussed.

LET'S LISTEN!
Once you're done predicting possible statements about each picture, let's listen to the correct answer choice for each one. Let's check how many you got perfectly.
Questions 1 - 4: LET'S TRY IT 1
Most of the distractors involve the wrong Noun or Verb. Prepositions can also be tested this way. Distractors like this are often easy to eliminate. Brainstorm Nouns and Verbs related to the picture before you listen.
2. Before listening, predict the statement type.
Some of the most common types are:
a. The general situation, usually uses state verbs (e.g. They are in an office. / The meal is ready.)
b. The activity, usually uses action verbs (e.g. The woman is writing something.)
c. An object's position, usually uses prepositions (e.g. out of, across from, inside, etc.)
STRATEGY 2:
Listening for the correct verb & Avoiding assumptions and reasonable statementsSNEAK PEEK 2
SNEAK PEEK 2: Using the Present Simple and Present Continuous
Instructions: Look at each picture below and make a sentence using each verb given using the Present Continuous or Present Simple.
VERBS:

VERBS:

be (cars) -
VERBS:

VERBS:

LET'S LISTEN!
Once you're done predicting possible statements about each picture, let's listen to the correct answer choice for each one. Let's check how many you got perfectly.
Questions 1 - 4: SNEAK PEEK 2
LET'S TRY IT 2
A. Instructions: Listen to the four sentences describing each picture. After listening to all the answer choices, select the best answer as quickly as you can. You can only listen once before giving your answers.
Please listen to the audio.
Questions 1 - 2: A
1. (A) ❑ (B) ❑ (C) ❑ (D) ❑
2. (A) ❑ (B) ❑ (C) ❑ (D) ❑
B. Instructions: Before checking the correct answers, listen to the statements again. After each sentence, your mentor will pause the audio. Then, repeat the verb that you hear and decide whether it is correct or wrong.
Please listen to the audio.
Questions 1 - 2: B

(B) Verb -
(C) Verb -
(D) Verb -
PICTURE 2
(A) Verb -
(B) Verb -
(C) Verb -
(D) Verb -
Now check your answers in Part A. Did you get them right? Which verbs answer choices do you think had distractors?
LET'S UNDERSTAND!
PICTURE 1
The correct statement is choice (C), "She's standing by the sink."
-
Choice (A) uses the word "kitchen" because the woman is indeed in a kitchen; however, the verb, "is walking" is incorrect.
-
Choice (B) uses "folding the newspaper" since the photo shows the woman holding a folded newspaper. In this case, it is not the correct answer since the verb is in the Present Continuous form which means it is an ongoing action but the act of "folding" is not shown in the photo. This is another example of a reasonable statement that makes an assumption.
-
Choice (D) uses the phrase "a cup of coffee" which you can see the woman holding, not "making." This is another example of an incorrect verb.
EXPLANATIONS:
PICTURE 2
The correct statement is choice (B), "She's sitting on the desk."
-
Choice (A) uses the phrase "picking up the computer books" only because we can see a computer in the photo and she is holding a notebook. However, she is not "picking up" anything. The object "computer books" cannot be determind in the photo either.
-
Choice (C) is also incorrect because of the distractor "computer" which appears in the photo, but the verb phrase "is working on" is not shown in the photo.
-
Choice (D) is an example of using an incorrect preposition. Although the verb "is sitting" can be seen in the photo, "at her desk" would have to mean that the woman is seated on her chair that is located where a chair would be located for someone to use a desk. The phrase "on her desk" is more fitting, such as that of choice (B).
EXPLANATIONS:
LET'S PRACTICE 2
Instructions: Try to brainstorm vocabulary and predict two possible statements for each picture below.

After making possible statements, listen to the answer choices and echo them silently.
Questions 1 - 5: LET'S PRACTICE 2
1. (A) ❑ (B) ❑ (C) ❑ (D) ❑
2. (A) ❑ (B) ❑ (C) ❑ (D) ❑
3. (A) ❑ (B) ❑ (C) ❑ (D) ❑
4. (A) ❑ (B) ❑ (C) ❑ (D) ❑
Try to repeat each answer choice in your head and check if it relates to the photograph.
4. Avoid assumptions
Be careful with distractors that refer to things or actions that you see in the pictures but do not correctly describe what is going on. These are reasonable that make assumptions about what may or may not be true about the pictures.
5. Echo each answer choice in your head and choose your answers as soon as you can.
While listening to the answer choices, hold your pencil over each one and keep it on the answer choice that you think is correct. Do not move your pencil until you hear a better one. Once you hear all the answer choices, shade your answer as quickly as possible and prepare for the next item.
LET'S DO THE CHALLENGE!
Let's apply the strategies and tips you have learned in this lesson by answering the items below.
Instructions: You will be given 30 seconds to examine the first few photographs before you hear the statements. For each question, you will hear four statements about the photograph on the screen. When you hear the statements, choose one that best describes what you see in the photograph.
Please listen to the audio.
